While appearing on NBC Arizona Midday recently, Dr. Jeffrey Alpern, DO, was asked, “Kim Kardashian recently gave birth to a healthy baby girl. But, as reported during her pregnancy, there were concerns about her wearing too tight shoes … can this lead to varicose and spider veins?”
Dr. Jeffrey Alpern, DO, founder and director of Vein Specialists of Arizona discussed the issue on NBC’s Arizona Midday. Joining Dr. Alpern on the highly-rated television program was Dr. Gary Kersten, MD, a Board Certified Phlebologist and OB/GYN who now exclusively treats varicose veins and venous insufficiency.
Kardashian’s habit of wearing high heels, even when pregnant, was first reported in the National Enquirer and quoted Dr. Arthur Wisot, a noted Los Angeles obstetrician. Although he had not treated Kardashian, Wisot agrees with Drs. Alpern and Kersten.
“High heels are not a good idea during pregnancy because your center of gravity shifts and you lose your sense of balance,” Wisot stated in the article. “And, improper footwear can also lead to aching, enlarged spider veins.”
