What are Spider Veins and some of the causes for them? Bright red to blue, spider veins commonly develop close to the skin’s surface from abnormal venous blood flow causing the veins to stretch and become enlarged. Also called thread veins, spider veins are a common, mild and often insignificant variation of varicose veins. They are frequently found on the legs and feet but can also occur on the face and upper body. Most patients who seek spider vein treatment are bothered by their unsightly appearance.
Dr. Jeffrey Alpern, D.O. a cardiovascular surgeon, vein specialist and founder of Vein Specialists of Arizona, says that spider veins on the legs may also be a sign of more serious venous disease.
“When spider veins appear on the legs, it could be a warning of more serious venous issues,” Dr. Alpern says. “Particularly when the spider veins are associated with symptoms such as aching burning pain, a feeling of tired legs that increases after long periods of standing or activity, restless legs, itchy skin, or swelling of the leg.”
Dr. Alpern says the development of spider veins is influenced by family history, trauma, hormonal influences, pregnancy, sedentary behavior and advancing age.
“Spider veins are frequently found on the legs and feet but can also occur on the face and upper body,” Dr. Alpern explains. “Most patients who seek spider vein treatment are bothered by their unsightly appearance, but they should be cautious and have a vein specialist make sure there are no underlying venous issues.”
“With proper diagnosis spider veins are not a serious health issue,” adds Dr. Alpern. “When the problem causing these veins is not addressed however, it is just a matter of time before new veins appear along with debilitating symptoms that interfere with walking, standing, sleeping and activities that you enjoy.”
