Why Vein Stripping for Varicose Veins Should Be Avoided

Varicose VeinsIf you suffer from large, twisted varicose veins, it is likely that your problem is related to incompetence of your greater saphenous vein. Probably you are currently or will be seeking care from a vein treatment specialist soon. But before you do, it is wise to get informed about state-of-the-art procedures that avoid less than effective results and a lengthy, painful recovery.

It is true that a procedure called “vein stripping” was once the best available option for treating varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency. This procedure almost always involves removal of the greater saphenous vein on the inside of the thigh and lower leg. An incision is made in the groin to tie off and divide the top of the vein. A vein stripper is then inserted and pushed through the vein above the knee and brought through the skin by a second incision. A small stripping device is then connected to the stripper and it is pulled back through the leg tearing the vein out with it. Pressure is then applied to the leg to reduce bleeding. This procedure is uncomfortable for the patient post-operatively and may result in bruising under the skin that can take months to completely resolve.

Vein stripping was replaced by Subfascial Endoscopic Perforator Surgery – the SEPS procedure. Although SEPS worked well for the most part, it required hospitalization and general anesthesia which was expensive and contributed to a number of complications.

Finally it became possible to streamline a very effective procedure performed with a laser introduced through a single needle stick. Laser ablation is performed within the office with the patient awake and comfortable. Unlike invasive and outdated vein stripping and SEPS, Saphenous laser ablation is well tolerated with local anesthesia and associated with very little if any post-operative bruising or trauma. Patients walk out of the office the same day and resume most of their normal activities in just a few days.

Only a handful of vein specialists throughout the US are experts in the use of these streamlined laser ablation techniques. Patients with varicose veins, spider veins, chronic venous insufficiency and serious leg ulcers have their existing problem completely eliminated through these state-of-the-art methods – yet most vein doctors don’t even know about them.
